The format A0, the basis for all other formats

In the printing industry, it is usual to designate the sizes of the papers that are used for printing your documents by the letter A followed by a number. This is the ISO 216 standard.

The A0 format is both the largest format of the A series and the basic format of this series from which all smaller formats are made: A1, A2, A3, the classic A4, etc.

The number after the letter A indicates the number of times the basic format, i.e. A0, must be folded into two exactly equal parts to obtain the designated format. Thus, if you fold the A0 format in half once, you get an A1 format; if you fold the A0 format in half 5 times, you get an A5 format.

The A0 format is therefore a very large paper format with multiple uses. It allows you to create communication supports intended mainly for an outside use because it makes them visible from far.

The dimensions of the A0 format

The A0 format refers to a sheet of paper with dimensions of 841 × 1189 mm.

A sheet of A0 format is 4 times larger than a sheet of A2 format (420 x 594 mm) and 16 times larger than a "classic" A4 sheet (21 x 29.7 mm).

The A0 format is the largest of the series of A formats categorized by the ISO 216 standard. It offers 1 square meter of printable area.

Posters, architectural plans, decorative posters: the uses of the A0 format

Because of its size and large printable area, the A0 format is particularly used to produce communication materials that will be visible from a distance.

  • Installed outdoors, the A0 format is ideal for the production ofposters advertising or events. It allows your brand to be visible to all passers-by in the street. Just like the tarpaulins promotional posters (narrower and higher than the A0 format), your A0 format posters can be installed on the outside walls of your store and will be read by motorists.
  • The A0 format can also be used indoors to create decorative posters to be displayed in a waiting room or Roll-ups that will accompany you when you travel to trade shows. The A0 format is also very useful as a support for the building trade: the large size printed construction plans offer a great reading precision.

Some questions about the A0 format

How to prepare your file for A0 printing?

There are two main points to keep in mind when preparing your file for A0 printing:

  • The resolution of the image: if you want to print an illustration (drawing or photo) in A0 format, you must ensure that the size of the photo is 841 x 1189 mm and that its resolution is 150 dpi.
  • Bleed: To ensure that your A0 poster or tarpaulin will look as good as you expect, don't forget to include a 5mm bleed on all the edges of your project. This bleed is a safety zone that extends beyond the final format of the printed document and ensures that the contours of your finished document are clean.
  • The quiet zone: in the same way inside the document, respect a quiet zone of 3 mm of the edges of the document in which you do not integrate important graphic elements (logo, visuals, texts) to avoid that they are cut at the cutting.

If in doubt, don't worry: at Copymage, we check all your A0 format files for free before printing!

What paper should I use for A0 size printing?

You can choose the paper of your choice for your A0 size prints.

However, in terms of grammage, we advise you not to choose a paper of less than 135 g/m2 which would be too fragile to allow the handling of the final support with regard to its A0 format. Similarly, a paper with a weight greater than 235 g/m2 could make the support heavy and difficult to handle.

In terms of finishes, you can choose between papers

  • uncoated for a more natural look but also more matte,
  • matte or glossy coating that will give a more sophisticated tone to your A0 poster.

Coated paper, with several layers of products, absorbs less ink in depth and thus allows colors to be rendered much more vividly.

How to print in A0 format?

A0 format printing requires the use of large format plotters that are only available to professional printers, such as Copymage. These machines allow you to print in a very short time while guaranteeing a very high quality of rendering. Compared to traditional large format printers, plotters offer a finer and more detailed print quality. Vector printing allows to obtain an excellent printing resolution whatever the dimensions of the support.
