TECHNICAL DATA SHEETS GLUED BACK
SQUARE BACK BINDING (from 25 to 550 sheets)
Square Back Binding is a type of binding that gives a document a professional and elegant look. It is available in sizes from A6 to A4.
A perfect bound document consists of a cover that surrounds the inner sheets. Different thicknesses of paper are usually chosen for these elements.
The cover is made up of a single sheet and the edge must be included in the layout. This sheet holds your document together like a book and an edge must be provided.
To prepare your cover according to the thickness of your document. You can refer to the slice thickness calculation table opposite.
CUSTOMISING THE EDGE OF YOUR DOCUMENT
To personalise the edge of your document, for example by writing a title and adding a logo, you have three options:
1. You are familiar with design software
Using the table above, determine the thickness of your document and provide us with the files in the correct format.
2. If you are not familiar with design software but would like to create your slice yourself
Send us the files for the 1st and 4th covers, as well as the spine separately, and we will make the joint to create your glued square back cover. If you wish to have a 2nd and 3rd cover, we will include them at that time.
3. You want to have a simple title on your spine
Leave us a message with the title you would like to have.
Minimum thickness to order your catalogue: 40 double-sided pages (20 sheets).
Maximum thickness: 6.5 cm.
To calculate the thickness of your catalogue which will also be the thickness of the edge in mm:
Number of paper sheets 100g x 0.1
Number of sheets of paper 115g x 0.1
Number of sheets of paper 135g x 0,12
Example for a 200-page double-sided catalogue(115g): 100 sheets x 0.1 = 10mm.
Minimum size of the edge to have text printed on it: 8 mm.
When we bind your document we will have to cut the paper. To make sure that we do not damage your printouts we recommend :
Document edge
Do not place elements such as text or logos within 3 mm of the edge of your finished document.
Binding side
On this side we recommend that you leave a 10 mm safety margin before placing your visual elements. For a perforated document (2 or 4 holes) we recommend 18 mm safety margin.
In the safety zone shown in turquoise in our illustrations you can place your elements wherever you want.
The format and orientation of fine books
Multiple formats are possible for the creation of your beautiful books. At Copymage, we offer several standard formats:
- The A4 format (210 x 297 mm), oriented portrait or landscape, allows you to create beautiful large format books. With a large printable space, you can serenely lay out illustrations and texts.
- The A5 format (148 x 210 mm), oriented portrait or landscape, is a more compact format that will make your beautiful books easily consultable. It still leaves a satisfactory space for quality illustrations.
- The square format (200 x 200 cm or 150 x 150 mm) is an original format that allows a creative layout for your beautiful books. Illustrations should be of a more modest size, even in full page.

The binding of beautiful books
At Copymage, we make your beautiful books using the method of glued square back binding. This binding method consists of applying a PUR (reactive polyurethane) glue on the edge of the pages of your beautiful books in order to assemble them together, then glue them to the cover you have chosen. This binding method allows you to obtain beautiful books that look just likean catalog art book for example.
The inside pages of beautiful books
For the inside pages of your beautiful books, we suggest using a heavier weight paper than for a glued square back brochure. Using a 170 g/m2 paper will allow you to obtain a high quality finish for your beautiful books.
This coated paper is available in two finishes:
- in matte finish: this paper will give a modern and sober look to the inside pages of your beautiful books.
- in glossy finish: this paper will accentuate the intensity and depth of the illustrations included in your beautiful books.
The cover of the beautiful books
For the cover of your beautiful books, we suggest you tochoose a 300 g/m2 paper . You will thus obtain a hard cover with a professional look close to the books sold in bookshops.
Then, at Copymage, we offer you the lamination of the cover of your beautiful books. This lamination is both a refined finish and a way to protect your beautiful books. Here again, there are three finishes available to you:
- matte lamination for a simple and elegant look
- glossy lamination to highlight the colors
- soft touch (or "peach skin") lamination for a matte and silky finish

A few questions about fine books
What image quality to choose for your beautiful books?
Your beautiful books often include many illustrations. To make sure that the printed output is what you expect, we recommend that you check two things:
- For optimal print quality, the resolution of the illustrations included in the fine books should be 300 DPI or higher. If necessary, you can change the DPI level of a visual, however, be aware that this action may have an impact on the image size. Increasing the initial DPI level will result in a smaller image size that will no longer fit the layout of your design. To avoid disappointment, be sure to work with the highest resolution images possible from the beginning of the design process.
- To ensure that the colors of your illustrations perceived on your computer screen correspond exactly to those you will obtain when printing, we advise you to check that the colorimetry of your file is in CMYK and not in RGB.

What layout for your beautiful books?
Layout plays an essential role in the creation of beautiful books.
In order to emphasize the content, whether it is text or illustrations, it is imperative to make the layout as airy as possible . Do not hesitate to opt for large margins that will highlight the content of your beautiful books. Also, let the reader breathe and soak up the content by dedicating each page to a specific illustration or text.
It can be interesting, depending on the objectives of your beautiful books, to choose different page colors depending on whether they carry illustrations (on a black background for example) or texts (on a white background). The reading of your beautiful books will be punctuated by pages dedicated to the titles of the different sections. It is a good idea to place all the title pages on the right side of the book so that they are immediately accessible to someone who is flipping through it. Choosea single font for all the texts in order to give harmony and coherence to the whole.

Under what conditions can you sell your fine books?
You can sell the beautiful books that you have printed by our consultants at Copymage, provided that you register them. If you print more than 100 copies of your beautiful books and if you plan to distribute them outside your family or friends, you simply need to apply for an ISBN number by filling out the online form on the website of the French-speaking agency for the international numbering of books(https://www.afnil.org/). This registration of your fine books is not free of charge. Your fine books will then be subject to a reduced VAT rate of 5.5% when sold.
