Stapled binding: an economical solution for a professional result

When you want to bind a multi-page document, there are several options. The stapled binding method is a solution that has many advantages and is ideal for producing presentation booklets, restaurant menus, magazines, brochures or product catalogues.

By stapled binding, printers mean binding pages together by inserting two metal staples in the centre fold. This method of binding is also called "double-stitch binding" or "saddle-stitch binding", emphasising the fact that the staples are "straddled" between two pages.

Let's take a look at the advantages of this binding method, the finishes compatible with stapled binding and its main uses.

What are the advantages of stapled binding?

  • Stapled binding is an economical economical method of binding. It is the cheapest method of binding a file, since it requires very little handling and staples are inexpensive materials.
  • The stapled binding offers great reading comfort. In contrast to the "glued square back" binding, the stapled binding allows the magazine or brochure to be opened completely and laid flat without the reader losing the page. In addition, unlike spiral binding, stapled binding does not interrupt reading in the middle of the page. You can place an illustration or text in the middle of a publication without the staples disturbing the reading, as they join the two parts of the illustration or text on different pages.
  • Stapled binding is a binding method that consolidates your booklet or brochure, thereby increasing its life span. Your product catalogue or restaurant menu can be circulated, opened and closed for months without deterioration.
  • The orientation of your document is also a way to reflect the spirit of your brand. Landscape or Italian format is a departure from the usual portrait format we use for all our official documents. This can be a subtle way of getting across an original message and is particularly suitable for materials with many visuals (travel catalogues, fashion books, etc.).

What finishes are compatible with a stapled binding?

  • The format

At Copymage, when you want to bind a document with a stapled binding, we offer several standard formats: A4 (21 x 29.7 cm), A5 (14.8 x 21 cm), A6 (10.5 x 14.8 cm) and a square format 21 x 21 cm. However, you are free to order a brochure, a presentation leaflet or a report in the size of your choice. We will be delighted to make your support to measure.

  • The paper

Different paper weights are available. For your stapled bindings, we suggest that you choose a paper with a weight of between 80 and 135 g for the inside pages, and a higher weight, for example 170 g for the cover.

You can then choose between different types of paper: matt coated paper (elegant and formal) or glossy (ideal for highlighting illustrations and photographs).

  • Laminating and varnishing

In order to give your booklet or brochure protection and refinement, we suggest adding a lamination (matt, glossy, soft touch or peach touch). Finally, the application of a selective or 3D varnish on the cover will give your catalogue a very distinctive, high-end look.

What are the uses of stapled binding?

There are many uses for stapled binding. At Copymage we offer two main categories of products that use this type of binding: magazines and booklets on the one hand and stapled brochures on the other. But behind this categorisation lies a wide range of possibilities:

  • This stapled binding method can be used to make your restaurant menu. In this case, we recommend that you choose an A5 format (148 x 210 mm) and that you laminate the pages of the menu. Your menu will then pass from hand to hand without the risk of being stained or damaged.
  • Stapled binding is also an excellent choice when it comes to producing your association's presentation brochure. With a cover weight of 170 g and a glossy paper, you will get a very high quality presentation brochure in which photos of the activities you offer will find their place.
  • For a professional publication of a certain standard, for example, the publication of your company's annual results, we suggest that you opt for a landscape format, a thick cover and a matt paper whose elegance will reflect the seriousness of your professional activity. Consider using simple and effective graphics to illustrate your results.
  • In a smaller format, staple-bound booklets are perfect for presenting the list of treatments in a beauty salon or the services offered by your company. As a business card for your company and an information medium for your customers, this booklet can easily be slipped into a handbag.
  • If you want to keep your company alive and circulate important information, why not create an internal magazine? In this case, we advise you to choose an A4 format which will allow you to insert the texts of your choice in an airy way. Here again, choose a glossy paper that will give the illustrations that will punctuate your publications some sparkle.
  • When travelling on business, don't forget to take your stapled product catalogue with you. To make it easy to carry, choose a small format that can be slipped into a pocket. It may also be wise to use a laminate or selective varnish that will highlight your product photos and attract the attention of your prospects.

Finally, the stapled binding method is ideal in many situations. Unfortunately, there is a limit to its use. It implies the respect of two constraints:

  • The number of pages in your document must be a multiple of 4,
  • Thenumber of pages in your document should be between 4 and 40.

For documents that do not meet these constraints, other binding methods are possible:

  • The spiral bindingSpiral binding: This binding method is suitable for reports, dissertations, company balance sheets, etc. You can choose between a plastic spiral and a metal spiral. Both are available in different colours.
  • The glued square back bindingThis method of binding is the one that comes closest to the way a book is made, as found in bookstores. When it comes to binding your novel, your product catalogue or your doctoral thesis, we invite you to choose this method, which offers a high quality finish and a very long life to these media that will be handled frequently.

Frequently asked questions about the stapled binder

What is the number of pages in a document using stapled binding?

It is only possible to use the stapled binding method if your document is longer than 4 pages and shorter than 40 pages. If your document is less than 4 pages long, we suggest that you choose a 1, 2 or 3-page leaflet, for example. If your document is longer than 40 pages, you should choose another binding method, such as a plastic or metal spiral, or the glued square back binding method.

In addition, your document should contain a number of pages that is a multiple of four. If this is not the case, but your document is less than 40 pages long, it is still possible to add one or two lined pages at the end of your brochure, which can be used by your customers to take some notes, for example.
